ANTIBODIES (2005)

MICHAEL (2011)
ANIMAL FACTORY (2000)
Based on an Edward Bunker novel, this film was perfect.  Really, when it comes to prison films, i can find almost nothing wrong with it.  If I could make one change, I would ask for more Tom Arnold.  He’s only in two scenes, and he is absolutely terrifying.  It’s on Netflix instant.  I highly recommend.
STANDER (2013)
I LOVE dirty cop flicks, and this one had so many elements that play right into my interests:  Early 80’s, South Africa, bank robbery, Thomas Jane, Uzis!
But the film doesn’t work.  The big reason why is it never quite figures out what it’s about.  Is it a message film about Apartheid? Is it a relationship drama?  Is is a heist film?  Simply, there is too much going on for us to understand who the hell this Stander guy is.  Which is unfortunate, because he’s such an interesting character:  Ex-cop turned bank robber who once robbed five banks in one day.  Fuck yeah!  Of course I want to see a movie about this guy.  But herein lays the real problem.  There was so much great stuff to work with that the filmmakers lost focus.  If they made it a smaller film, it would have worked better.  They took on too much, and the narrative suffers.

SPRING BREAKERS (2013)
Absotlutely adored this film.  Korine is really coming into his own, without losing his edge or message.  On another note, will not be sending my 14 year old sister to see this anytime soon.
THE PARALLAX VIEW (1974)
THIS MUST BE THE PLACE (2011)
This is a gem of a film.  Slow burn mystery with the best protagonist I have seen in years.  Why is he so good?  Because we learn to love him and his journey as we watch the film.  Organic storytelling at it’s finest.  By far my favorite Penn to date.  Also, the photography is stunning.  Every shot serves the tone of the scene and the emotional state of the characters.  I must see more films like this.  And killer, KILLER score.
DEADFALL (2012)
This film suffered from a slew of problems, but the antagonist was great.  By far the best part/character.  So much so that you end up rooting for him.  Not a good sign for your protagonist.  The biggest issue DEADFALL could have addressed was having the protag and his love interest actually do something instead of spending most of the film stuck in one location talking and screwing.
HARA-KIRI: DEATH OF A SAMURAI (2012)
MANHUNTER (1986)
ANGST (1983)
ORDINARY PEOPLE (1980)
There’s a reason this film beat out RAGING BULL for the Oscar in 1980.  And that reason is Beth (played by Mary Tyler Moore).  She has to be one of the scariest villains ever written.
